You’re not imagining it.
Confidence, curiosity and calm can vanish when school feels like a never-ending struggle.
But here’s the good news: things can change - and quickly.
Every child deserves to feel confident, supported and excited about learning.
I’m a qualified teacher and creative tutor based in Mottingham, London.
For over 10 years, I’ve helped children aged 5–11 who were anxious, behind, or had given up on school — and turned them into confident, curious learners who actually enjoy learning again.
Every child has unique brilliance waiting to shine - sometimes they just need the right person to help them see it.
School was never easy for me. I had to work hard just to keep up — and for a long time, I believed I wasn’t smart enough.
It wasn’t until secondary school that a couple of incredible teachers really saw me and fought for me. But the damage from earlier years had already been done.
I still remember my Year 6 teacher telling me, “You’ll never make anything of yourself.” Those words stuck. That voice of self-doubt still whispers sometimes.
But I also remember the moment I realised I could make a difference. My passion for teaching actually started with horses — supporting young riders helped me discover the power of patient, confidence-building instruction.
Now, I bring that same belief into every tutoring session:
no child is ‘behind’ — they just haven’t been taught in a way that works for them yet.
That's why I know I have the skills and passion to work with children who struggle. In fact, helping those who are struggling has always been a part of who I am.
A hobby of mine since a child has been horses and over the years I have loved the challenging horses, the ones everybody else would give up on. The ones that are too difficult for the majority of people. I thrived on understanding their mind and what made them behave in a certain way. You can't get the best out of a horse by being a task master, you need patience and empathy (and some bravery to deal with some broken bones along the way)!
It may sound strange, but I use the same ethos when tutoring - I take a pause on the academics, I get to know each child, what they like or dislike, what motivates them and what switches their brain off, what fears they have, what successes they have and I use this to help build their confidence, to see their strengths and to find the strategies that work for them.
When a child starts to believe in themselves is when they will make the most progress!
